This is essentially my first attempt at a political piece. I do not consider it to be finished. I wanted to make it funny and submit it to the OSU humor magazine Sundial.
I really am not a funny person and I got trashed at their party and made a fool of myself so I think I’m just going to drop out of that club. I’ve started attending groups outside of OSU. Frankly it’s better networking and better quality of work as many of these people are college graduates. No offense meant. And I’m still doing The Grove of course.
This is missing nothing I just think I might add more and/have no idea where I would submit this if it were even worthy of being submitted somewhere. Like said before just trying something different.
Respect
R-E-S-P-E-C-T find out what it means to me, so goes the famous song by Aretha Franklin. We the American people are a nation built upon the ideals of freedom and respect. Did we not break away from England when they looked upon us a colony far lower than the homeland whom they could tax with no just cause? Had we not a civil war over the unfair slavery and dehumanization going on in the south? We have had civil marches to bring a stop to segregation and we have protested wars. We have equality acts and freedom of religion for a reason.
This is supposed to be the land of the free and equal right?
Well what of our chosen representatives? Are these people supposed to be elevated up as being somehow above the rest of us? Are they supreme gods who look down upon mere mortals with sick amusement? Is the demanded respect of these individuals far more important than the millions they are supposed to represent? Well how big is this god and how small are the people? What if this god is on a team of gods like the great superbowl over our souls being coached by God on one side Satan the other? The Bible belt is one hell of a defensive line, but damn does technology run fast. These gods in the big house know what’s best obviously. Olympians vs Titans it is one or the other with no in-between. We worship Steelers in this house and will consider no other. Colts are a false profit and their follower’s ignorant fools.
This is what our government has become. A game of winning and losing.
“We are winning…It doesn’t really matter to us (how long the shutdown lasts) because what matters is the end result.” Said a senior administration official.
“This isn’t some damn game,” Speaker John Boehner said after a GOP conference meeting. He slammed down a copy of the Wall Street Journal, where an anonymous senior White House official was quoted as saying Obama was “winning” the shutdown. (Korte USA Today).
Rand Paul of Kentucky was overheard telling his Kentucky colleague, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, on a live microphone Thursday: “We’re going to win this, I think.” (Korte USA Today).
It’s not about what is best for the people, it is about being on the side that wins. RESPECT; we must respect our leaders and our leaders have too much self-respect and pride to make a compromise that could prevent their team from winning. This is the big SuperBowl we must have that trophy.
This is about the good guys vs the bad guys. Cowboys and Indians. This is about representing your home team even when the quarterback makes a bad play. These gods are battling on our behalf after all.
“We’re not going to be disrespected,” Rep. Marlin Stutzman (R-Ind.) told The Washington Examiner. “We have to get something out of this. And I don’t know what that even is.”
So maybe it’s not a trophy they are fighting over. Maybe it’s a matter of pride on certain issues. It’s a matter of refusing to compromise because of inflated egos and a sense of deserving respect over the average person. So I guess it really doesn’t matter what respect means to me, but what does respect mean to the both the Republican and Democratic parties?
